Our church has been doing a series called, "Beware of the drift" on the book of Colossians. It's really got me thinking.
Likely, no one plans in advance to gain 20 pounds in 10 years.
Most people don't set out to become distant from family members.
We're not intentional about building a habit of anxiety.
We don't hope and dream to neglect our faith.
And yet, we drift toward all kinds of unintentional behaviors and unwanted habits.
Psalm 141:4a says,
"Don’t let me drift toward evil or take part in acts of wickedness"
What if "wickedness" doesn't only means violence or intentionally hurting another person? Could it also include neglecting priorities or not pursuing what God has for you?
God offers believers so much - as a people group and personally. Let me explain.
As part of God's family, we are all offered forgiveness for whenever and however we miss the mark of living how He wants us to live. There is a peace available to us that the world does not know - like being in the eye of a hurricane - the swirling chaos around us is absolute, but God has a surreal peace available for us in the middle of it all. There's wisdom for those who need guidance or resolution. There's hope for the discouraged. Connection for the lonely and SO MUCH MORE!
Then, there's the personal. God has gifted each of us in different ways. He's put a variety of dreams in our hearts. He wants to guide us in the way He has for us personally.
But we are not going to drift into any of it.
We don't drift into receiving or releasing forgiveness.
We don't drift into surreal peace, or guidance, or hope, or connection.
We don't drift into health or healthy habits.
And pursuing personal destiny is going to take intentionality.
Believers must become, and remain, active followers! That's why "D" in the coaching road is so important. Dedication helps us to maintain and retain the gain! When we set up yellow and red flags it's a system to recognize our natural tendency to drift. When we have intentional times of self-evaluation and encourage on-the-fly feedback, we are purposefully setting ourselves up for success to beware the drift...
My annual run-through of Life on Purpose is well worth the investment. I recognized many dirfts over the years there, made necessary shifts, and ENJOYED the results! My personal "Aha's" of focus over the years have included better health, a stronger body, closer friendships, upgrading my home and wardrobe, writing a book, and investing in my devotional life. Not all at once, but intentionally over the years, one focus at a time.
Hebrews 2:1 says,
"So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it."
