Whether you are a coach or a coachee, pastor or parishioner, minister, mom, or mentor the number one obstacle that holds anyone back is something I call the Sunday drive perspective.
When you are on a Sunday drive you don’t really have a destination. You are just driving around for the sake of getting out of the house. (If you have never heard of a Sunday drive, that is something we used to do before gas prices were ridiculous and also before our Sundays were a desperate attempt at recuperation from the work week.)
The point of a Sunday drive was the rambling. It was just a journey with no specific destination for the purpose of spending time with whoever went along. There's nothing wrong with that if your purpose is to slow down and spend time together.
But when our lives slip into a Sunday drive mindset we don’t have a clear destination. There is no defined purpose or goal we are working toward. Our lives are aimless.
We are kind of just rambling.
We lack focus.
Instead – what if we ask God for a next? I used to tell the youth we worked with that if they couldn’t tell me what God was doing in their lives they were probably dealing with pride or apathy. A Sunday drive mentality could be a type of apathy, or maybe it is just ignorance.
What if God has a next for you that you have not yet identified? If you are feeling aimless here are some possible nexts:
There are so many purposeful goals you could choose!
1 Corinthians 9:26 (NASB) says, Therefore I run in such a way as not to run aimlessly; I box in such a way, as to avoid hitting air;
When we run aimlessly, we are likely to go nowhere in particular.
When we have clear goals, we are removing the #1 obstacle that holds us back! Aimlessness – Sunday drive syndrome!
Good coaching helps! Good coaching helps you choose the right next, own your future, right-size your action steps, and move forward purposely!
Recently I got some good coaching about finishing a project I was working on. It was a big project and I had lost steam. I wondered if it was still relevant. If it was worth completing. What I came to in coaching was that for my own integrity I wanted to finish this book before I started anything else and so, I am happy to say - Here’s my BIG NEWS!
I DID IT!!
I’ve been working on a book about dating for about 10 years now and I just completed the first draft. It’s called “Playing With Matches”. (Get it?)
It didn’t’ just happen. I had to make it a goal. I had to start it and keep plugging away. It took longer than I thought, but it is finished! Or at least the first draft is. My next step is moving toward publication – either through a publishing house or self-publishing. I’ll keep you posted, but for today I rejoice in a project completed that would never have happened without an intentional goal!
What’s next for you? I’d love to hear what you are intentionally moving toward!
