6 Reasons NOT To Consider Coach Training

Humor me for this blog? [Warning: it's tongue-in-cheek.]

Here are 6 reasons you should NOT learn more about the coaching paradigm.

1) You are helping people move forward on their own already. When they come to you, you always know what they should do and you just tell them. (If only they would listen.)

2) You have plenty of time to listen to people's stuff. In fact, you enjoy hearing the same things from people over and over.

3) You love being the "go-to" person. When people need you to make plans for how they should move forward it makes you feel great! Plus, you probably know better than them what they should do with their lives anyway right?

4) You are more educated than they are. It goes without saying that whoever has the most education knows best what should happen next.

5) You are more experienced. They can learn from their own mistakes, or you can tell them how things went for you.

6) You feel responsible for their well-being. You want to make things better for the people around you, so they should come to you when they have any needs; physical, spiritual, emotional, or relational.

Here's the skinny though.

Biblically, in the New Testament, it is God's plan for each of us to go to Him ourselves. You can read more about this in Hebrews chapters 8 and 10.

Hebrews 8:11 says, "And they will not need to teach their neighbors, nor will they need to teach their relatives, saying, ‘You should know the Lord.’ For everyone, from the least to the greatest, will know me already.

This doesn't mean there is no place for teaching or pastoring, in fact in coaching we learn about the growth paradigm Telling > Teaching > Training > Trusting. There is a place for each. Perhaps, all too often though, we feel responsible to figure things out for people when our job could be just to help them learn to have a personal relationship with God and discern what He is saying to them.

If you want to be more effective in following the great commission - making disciples (not dependents) coach training may be the best investment you have ever made!
