What if taking your care to the next level required less of you but was more effective?!
Is that even possible!
Caring for the young requires a lot from the caregiver.
It can be downright exhausting, but now that my kids are grown I am so proud of them. They feed themselves, tie their own shoes, read on their own etc. In fact my kids have mastered adulting and are having their own families and making an impact on the world! I’m so proud of them.
When they were young it wasn’t always easy, but as we taught them how to do things they grew and became more and more healthfully independent.
Our church family is like this, too.
When people are young in faith they need to have things done for them, be taught about expectations and they need practice to get things right.
As leaders it can be easy to get stuck thinking the people we are caring for are perpetually young. The truth is that they will remain incapable of doing things for themselves if we always feel the need to do things for them. When we let go, they begin to grow.
Remember the first time you helped a little one learn to tie their shoes? It was tedious. They likely didn’t get it right on the first try. You could do it way faster (and you probably did step in and do it for them when you were in a hurry to get out the door – right!?)
But if we believe in the little learners in our life, they figure it out. They make mistakes, it takes them longer at first, but eventually they can tie their shoes without even thinking about it.
It’s like that with life decisions. If we make them for people they will never learn to be confident in their own ability to manage their own lives. They may make mistakes at first. It may take them longer than if you tell them what to do, but their confidence will only grow with personal experience.
